Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Upgrades to equipment give a bonus on the item's stats. This bonus scales depending on the rarity and strength of the upgrade component.
Components
Upgrade components make your armour and weapons better. They can be obtained by the destruction of enemies, finding them in spheres of items or buying them from karma dealers. They can also be rescued from equipment that has them or by using a high-tier salvage kit such as the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. In contrast to other items upgrades aren't destroyed when they are removed from an item.

Sets
